Modern Education ~ Traditional Values
At F.K.S. we aim to provide the children with a well-balanced education which incorporates the best of traditional and modern teaching methods. Our syllabus is based on the National Curriculum, but extends beyond that to prepare pupils for Common Entrance Examinations and the 11+. The Head Teacher and staff offer guidance to parents to assist them in their choice of senior schools.
All pupils study the following subjects:
In Reception the syllabus (E.Y.F.S.) is based on the six Early Learning Goals of personal, social and emotional development; communication; language and literature; mathematical development; knowledge and understanding of the world; physical development; and creative development.
Strong emphasis is placed on acquiring basic skills in literacy and numeracy. These form the foundation for development in the children of the desire and curiosity to learn. A variety of schemes and teaching approaches are used to deliver the English Curriculum. To underpin this at Andrews House, we aim to hear all children read on a daily basis and there is close liaison with parents throughout the school to facilitate maximum progress in this area.
Mathematical development is achieved by an integrated approach of formal work, practical tasks and investigational activities. Mental arithmetic strategies are encouraged and developed from an early stage.
The use of specialist teachers is introduced from the outset and develops further as the children progress through the school. Children in the upper years are split into sets for Mathematics and English. This enables the more able children to move at a faster pace.
It is our policy to provide Learning Support throughout the school for those children who need additional help. The support may be for a brief period or last several years.
The school is non-denominational and welcomes all faiths. Assemblies are considered an important part of F.K.S. life and they are used to reinforce the values of friendship, kindness and sincerity that lie at the core of the school ethos.
There are close links with the Church of the Holy Cross in the village, which is used as the venue for important services during the year.
