Sports & PE

All children take part in regular P.E. and games lessons each week. At Andrews House the emphasis is on improving the children’s co-ordination and teaching of basic skills as well as having fun.
The P.E. syllabus includes:

• Cross Country
• Gymnastics
• Rugby
• Cricket
• Dance
• Netball
• Rounders
• Swimming
• Hockey
• Athletics

Both individual and team sports are valued, and teams compete regularly in leagues and tournaments against schools in both the maintained and independent sectors.

Outings

Each class will have several educational visits in a year. These are as diverse as Reception classes visiting Hatfield Forest to go pond dipping, and Year 5 taking part in tours of the Palace of Westminster or the National gallery.

A theatre trip has become an annual event for year six pupils. Children in the Reception year through to Year 5 enjoy an annual pantomime performance in Chelmsford.

There is an annual French residential trip organised by Mme Kiddy for Year 6.

The school provides opportunities to extend pupils’ knowledge of public services and institutions through a good range of cross-curricular projects enhanced by visits to museums, exhibitions, historic buildings and galleries.

Creative Arts

Music is an important part of the curriculum. Good singing techniques are fostered from the start. There are three choirs at Edwards House and Year 2 entered the Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year 2010.

Children in Year 2 learn to play the Ocarina, a simple wind instrument and precursor of the recorder which pupils learn from Year 3 upwards. Many children have individual instrumental lessons. The children are given opportunities to play in assembly to develop their confidence.

Children in both houses are taught by a specialist drama teacher. All children in the school have opportunities to appear in dramatic productions, ranging from assemblies to large scale productions involving the music staff.

There are limited spaces available for pupils to take up individual music lessons in singing, keyboard, flute, clarinet or saxophone.
